Using Webflow Editor

August Schools
Description

George explains that the site is being edited in a password-protected dev version that mirrors the live site, so changes can be made safely before replacing the current site. He walks through how to use the retired Webflow editor by going to the pages list, opening the dev pages, and editing copy directly with autosave enabled, while noting that adding more complex content like extra bullets may require his help. George also says most pages are already in place and navigable, with a few still skipped from Notion, and that he will continue adding images as work progresses.

[00:00] Hey folks, good morning. So following up a little bit on Pete's frustration and request to see how to get in and edit things. So there are two ways to do it, as I mentioned. This first

[00:10] view that you're looking at here is looking at the staging environment that's published live. So it's it's technically live on the internet, but it's behind a slash dev, which has a password and thus

[00:20] can't be read. But it allows us to basically have the entire website built out and working. So I can go to like surveys and assessments, for example, and it'll take me to that page.

[00:30] Now all of the pages that are linked within the nav now are all within that dev. So you're not going to accidentally sort of like spill into the live site or anything,

[00:40] and then later we're going to just net replace everything that's on the live site with the new versions. So some of the pages, for example, are like this one is basically a copy of

[00:50] what the current surveys page is. The other ones are just, you know, blank and only have the copy

[01:00] that was in Notion placed in here. Then you can see I'm adding areas where I'm like, oh, we need a feature name where I kind of like made one up or whatever. And then obviously the images are missing because that's what I'm working on sort of outside of the Webflow environment.

[01:10] So all of these things, like I said, are the nav is sort of mostly working as far as being

[01:20] able to click and get around to all the different pages. There are some where there just isn't a page yet because like in Notion it's still like on the skip thing or whatever, and I realized that

[01:30] there's also some tentativeness about the menu itself. But the point being is that the majority of it is there, and, you know, it's just a matter of starting to kind of tweak the copy and get

[01:40] stuff in, which brings me to the point of tweaking the copy. So to get to the site, they've retired the old editor. So I think right as we started working together, I was like, I'm going to invite

[01:50] you to this editor. They're going to get rid of it soon. But no matter, you guys are hosting your own site anyway. So it's much easier for you to get to. So if I switch to Webflow, you will see

[02:00] something similar to this. So I believe the way that you'll see it is probably via a view that

[02:10] looks more like that. But point being is that you'll see that you have the nav up here, but it's not as like easy to use because now we're in this editor view. So you can always up on the right

[02:20] hit this preview button, and that will compile like a version of the site. It's not always perfect

[02:30] because it doesn't render custom code exactly right, but in any event, for the most part, it works. And that will allow you to kind of move around the site. But it's very easy to accidentally edit stuff

[02:40] when you're navigating that way. So it's a better idea to use the pages module on the left. So you can see like right now, Pete is editing the live forms page. So we want to actually be

[02:50] editing the pages inside of dev here. Those are all the ones that are going to be linked within

[03:00] this world here. So you can see if I switch to leadership, they're all in there. And then you can just hit the edit button and then just type away and edit what you need. If there's pieces

[03:10] where you're like, oh, I need to add, you know, another bullet or whatever here, it's a little annoying for you to do that. You just have to kind of ping me and let me know and then I can add it.

[03:20] And then you can change it. They're still working out some of the kinks, but in any event, the vast majority of the editing can happen there. Everything that you do is auto saved.

[03:30] So you don't have to worry about like publishing it or if my change has been captured, any of that. It's all auto saved. So if you change some copy here, even if I'm working on the page lower down, it'll change the copy above. And then the only time that it would really matter

[03:40] is if you want to kind of commit those changes, you could go up here and hit publish. And again,

[03:50] you can publish pretty much all of your changes that you're making here because it's in this stage environment anyway. So it's sort of closed off to the world. Okay. All of the pages for the

[04:00] most part are there. There's only, like I mentioned, a couple of notion that are still skipped. So those pages haven't been placed in, but otherwise everything should be navigable and

[04:10] you should be able to see all the pages. And then I'm going to start just plugging in images as we get going.
