Custom Video Option

Description

George explains two ways to handle custom video embeds in Webflow: using the native video module with a Vimeo CMS link, or using a custom app that uploads videos to Google Cloud and streams them with an open-source player. He says the Google Cloud approach stores the public video URL in the CMS after processing, publishes the page automatically, and lets him customize player colors and controls through code. George adds that Vimeo is better if people need easy video management and sharing settings, while a cloud bucket works if the main goal is simply hosting videos on the internet.

[00:00] Hey Eddie, so for what it's worth I figured I would quickly show you the way to kind of like custom do it. So on my site I have a handful of different video

[00:10] sort of setups. So like the one that I'm using for like you know they get like no traction anymore but the ones when I was sort of promoting webinars and things I

[00:20] had I was just using the video module and what's nice about it is I can pipe in the Vimeo link that exists in that CMS right so like it's nice because I

[00:30] can make one template and then it'll just load that thing. Now I'm paying Vimeo to be able to kind of you know set the thing to be in my colors and not

[00:40] have the share buttons or set that stuff up as I want right but I'm kind of in the process of moving away from that anyway just given the cost. So the other

[00:50] way to do it is what I'm doing for Voom which is how you'll actually watch this video which is where I basically have this app that then uploads it to

[01:00] Google Cloud and then is streaming the video from there using an open source player. So I can't remember I mean Codex wrote this thing so I don't know exactly

[01:10] which one it is or what player it's using but I'm sure you're like I'm happy to copy this code to you I'm sure you can figure it out but it basically is doing the same thing and you can see here it's plugging in the video URL from

[01:20] the CMS as what it's pulling and that in my automation it basically puts it on Google Cloud and then once the video is like processed it has the public link

[01:30] it grabs that public link and puts it into the CMS and then publishes the page so in this case you know you can actually like I'm just paying for the

[01:40] storage of the video this is an open source player so it runs every time but like Webflow doesn't have any doesn't understand what it is at all just sees

[01:50] this custom code so for me that doesn't matter like I don't need it anywhere else I obviously am NOT showing a preview or any other thing here it's just pure code but then when I go and run the thing it'll go ahead and pull

[02:00] the the correct video often so you can see like I was able to set up my colors

[02:10] and stuff and I'm doing that in the leave its rate in the settings on here yeah see there's literally like the colors for the main playhead and all

[02:20] that sort of stuff are all in here so definitely not difficult to achieve if you wanted to just like throw all the videos up there and then have Claude

[02:30] make a little manager or whatever that connects to the cloud bucket and sort of does it like you could certainly do that so it might be I don't know how often you

[02:40] guys are updating videos and like if there's other usage or something so if you're like I need people to just be able to add videos to the site and grab a link quickly and put it on Vimeo is probably a better option because you can

[02:50] sort of see and visualize what the sharing buttons will be like all that sort of stuff and set the permissions and everything if you're just like I need videos on the internet a cloud bucket can work it just you know it's

[03:00] open to the world and so on and so forth but anyway that's that thought I would

[03:10] share
