Figma Help!

Description

George explains that Figma works differently from tools like Canva because you are working on a large canvas made up of frames rather than separate files. He says editing can be tricky when objects are nested inside multiple layers, so you may need to keep clicking or double-clicking to reach the exact object you want. George also notes that the layers panel helps show whether you are selecting a whole grouped structure or just one specific element.

[00:00] Hey Christine, I thought I would just I thought I would just share a video because this can be a little bit tricky in Figma. So and this is kind of thing that drives people crazy about using Figma if you've never used it.

[00:10] So the one thing to note and like big critical difference from like Canva or other tools is

[00:20] you're looking in a huge canvas on which there are a bunch of different quote-unquote files. Files don't exist until you export them. So instead they're frames.

[00:30] And frames can exist within frames. You can have like a real inception moment kind of happen. But the point being is that there's a bunch of different frames and each of those are

[00:40] set up and you can think of them most closely to like a web page. Meaning there are relationships between them that can be locked. Like for example, I can change the the top padding on this frame and if you continue to double click in there

[00:50] you would never get it because it's changing one of the properties of the object not necessarily

[01:00] the object itself. So in this case, I have 14 point spacing which I could change the spacing of everything in there. And to that point if I just drag another piece in it will take the

[01:10] same sizing and height and everything. So what you're experiencing is basically trying to edit something, I'm assuming one of these, that's already that's inside sort of multiple layers. So if you look at the

[01:20] layers over here, you can see that we have this whole thing is the invite. Then inside of there some text is just placed

[01:30] just statically. Like it's just on the frame. Others though exists within

[01:40] relationships. So I have this frame within a frame here and that's because I wanted to be able to have consistent padding going all the way around. And so as a result, I can kind of keep going in and I'll be able to click

[01:50] into it to be able to edit. So that that's probably what you're experiencing. You basically have to keep on clicking or get down to the object itself and then double click on it. Then you should be able to get into it.

[02:00] You'll also notice the same thing if you're trying to move some things. So if you try to move this it'll kind of like keep going back into place until you get it like far enough outside of the frame. And I could do the same or pulling that down in here.

[02:10] It'll start to create a relationship to all of that stuff, right? So you have to kind of be a little bit aware of how some of the stuff is set up and it's good to have the

[02:20] the tree over here on the left. So you can see if the thing you're you're trying to get to is actually selecting all of the pieces and not just the one that you want.

[02:30] So sorry for the confusion. Welcome to Figma.
